Best End of the Night, I've only read a couple of Louis-Ferdinand Céline novels Kerouac led me to Céline.
I've only read a couple of Louis-Ferdinand Céline novels. Kerouac led me to Céline, just as he led me to Stendhal and a copy of The Red and The Black which I lost; halfway through reading, drunk in a cab, trying to get from La Condesa to Santa Fe; to work, in Mexico City. After I lost that paperback, I managed to obtain an English copy of Céline's Journey to the End of the Night; suitable, considering the cab ride. The scope of that novel really best hit me. The humour with which Céline dealt with the nature of labour and the war impressed me no end. I was reminded of it, later, upon hearing a track from one of the Scott Walker records. Next, that track might've been called. To have had a drink with Walker and Céline would've been memorable. I don't know whether Céline would've spoken English or, indeed, whether it would have mattered if he did. The best of times are nothing to do with syntax, ostensibly.
