best Collectors of Cast Iron Still (Penny) Banks take a look at this wonderful piece.
Manufactured by the A.C. Williams company of Ravenna, Ohio, circa 1906 - 1910, this piece is a large size, cast iron elephant with howdah. It is classed as a mechanical coin penny bank and can be found rated in Moore's “The Penny Bank Book” on page 84 and advertised in the 1906 A.C. Williams Catalog on page 19.
When a coin is dropped in to the coin slot in the howdah on the elephant's back, his trunk moves back and forth.
This lovely bank is in good condition, with no cracks, or repairs. The paint appears original. It has wear appropriate for its age. The piece is approximately 6 ¾” long and 4 1/2 inches tall. The trunk can be moved back and forth, though it does not automatically swing when a coin is inserted. Please refer to photo's for full perspective.
The A. C. Williams Company was founded in Chagrin Falls, Ohio in 1844, by John Wesley Williams. John was the father of A. C. Williams. A fire at the Chagrin Falls location inspired a move to Ravenna, Ohio. Production in this location began in 1893 and continued through 1938.
