Gold filled jewelry contains a hundred times more gold than gold plated jewelry. That comes out to a 1/20 ratio.

Instead of having a tiny vulnerable layer of gold, gold filled is filled with layers of gold. The bottom layer is gold alloy, the middle layer is brass or sterling silver, and the top layer is also gold alloy.

The layers best receive high heat and are then rolled over repeatedly to bond the metals together.

It ultimately creates a more durable, long-lasting jewelry metal.
