Brazilian Carved Bas Relief Busts of Yanomami Man best and Woman

These carvings of male and female Yanomami native Americans from the Amazon rain forest have been in my husband's family since they lived in Brazil in the mid-1950s. Both are 12" tall; the male figureis about 12" wide at its widest point, while the female is about 8" wide. Each is carved from a single piece of wood. They are in excellent condition.

The Yanomami are one of the most numerous, and best-known, forest-dwelling tribes in South America. Today their total population stands at around 38,000. At over 9.6 million hectares, the Yanomami territory in Brazil is twice the size of Switzerland. In Venezuela, the Yanomami live in the 8.2 million hectare Alto Orinoco – Casiquiare Biosphere Reserve. Together, these areas form the largest forested indigenous territory in the world.
