A wild undomesticated relative of the pineapple, kown as cohuixtles in its native range

After the plant flowers, it forms a radial arrangement of scales from which fruits resembling thin purple shallots can be pulled. THe skin is coated with a very abrasive wool that must be cleaned off or otherwise removed before consumption. THe fruits can then be peeled and prepared for usage. They are very acidic, like several pineaples condensed into one tiny fruit. Thus fruits are ofther juiced and added to juice or water and made into a refreshing drink. Fruits also are flame roasted to cook off the wool and render them less acidic for consumption.
