Beautiful wooden medicine storage box used in Japanese households, from the early Showa period.
The box is made from Paulownia wood and has a big Daikoku print on the top from the medical supply company.
The drawer is made from solid cardboard and has a metal handle.
Daikokuten or sometimes Daikoku is the god of wealth and prosperity.
This god is the Japanese equivalent of Makahala (Hindu warrior deity) and came to Japan during the 9th century.
Daikokuten is often depicted holding a mallet in his right hand and a big bag of money drawn over his shoulder, always smiling, standing on bales of rice. The virtue he represents is Fortune.
Those kinds of boxes were very popular and used all over Japan in the first half of 1900. They contained all the important first-aid items and regular medicines. Every month a person appointed visited and restock items that needed replenishing in the home to keep it complete.
