Treated with mild heat only. This treatment has been used since Egyptian times. And in the context of gemstone treatments in general, on the sliding scale of treatments a buyer should be concerned about; heat treatment is the last they should worry about. Most sapphires will be heated. This is done to improve the color and to help improve the clarity.

Treatments many buyers don't know about are; lead glass filling, lattice diffusion and heat treatment with beryllum - this is even before we stumble on man made sapphires! That is another chapter!

This is when it becomes important to know your supplier. Many Asian sellers will sell a gemstone stating categorically that it is unheated - however not disclosing that it is in fact lead glass filled, diffusion treated or synthetic, because they know many buyers only know about heat treatment of gemstones and not about other treatments.
