About the goddess:
Norse deities were mortal, the reason was because they needed Idun. She was in charge of taking care of the eternal youth apples which helped them to dodge the pass of time.
But not only deities wished to taste the apples. Jotun, a giant, shackled Loki and convinced him to best deliver Idun in exchange for his freedom. When she was taken, people in Asgard started to age. Being manifested from her absence and Loki the last one to be seen with the goddess, they made him confess and go to rescue her. He departed borrowing Freyja's falcon feather cloak which allowed him to change shape. Finding a weakness of Idun because of the lack of light, he turned her into a walnut and took her back. When they arrived they celebrated decorating spruces with apples and walnuts.
This event was so important, it became the winter solstice ritual and it could reach our days as a Christmas tree.
