best At first glance, everything is grey in winter. Including this old farm shed near Cold Lake, Alberta. If you look closely, though, you will see a spectrum of muted and somehow respectful colour. A pale grey sky. The yellow undertones of weeds and long grass poking out of the snow. And the almost foreboding measures of grey and black in the long abandoned shed. The garish counterpoint to this austere beauty is the electrical box at the side of the road. Bright green with blaze orange, the equipment serves a function, warning people not to dig in the area. But it certainly looks garish in comparison to the dignified grey of this sad old building.

If you live in the Cold Lake area, you might recognize this barn. It's on the "back way" to Cold Lake Provincial Park.
