Latvian best Sash from Alsunga

National costume sash from the district of Alsunga, Latvia. Woven in the backstrap, pick up technique using woolen yarns in orange, black, pale yellow, green and white. Length is 3 yards and 14 inches including a 3-1/2 inch fringe at either end; width is 2-1/4 inches.

Geometric design throughout. The length of the sash indicates it was meant for a slimmer woman - tradition dictates that the sash should circle the waist twice, with the ends hanging down to the knees or lower.

The sash is in best good condition.
