best For your consideration is this vintage French Toleware, Serving Bowl or Bread Serving Tray! Circa 1950's.
The background color is black over tin or zinc and features a hand painted landscape with a stream, people dressed in 18th century fashion and what seems to be a ruin of an arched portal or gate. The trim accents around the edges and the landscape are painted in metallic gold. The tray is 13” long and 7”wide (across). It stands at 4.25” high at the tallest point!
This piece is an overall very nice condition with most of its paint in tact. I do notice some small patches of missing gold on the edges as well as a small crescent shaped area of paint loss on the left-hand side of the “arch“ in the landscape. This isn't entirely obvious due to the impressionistic technique of the painting. It actually looks like shading or possibly the back of a tree. If one was crafty and wanted to do a quick paint repair, I'm sure it would turn out wonderfully. I've decided not to touch it and just to wipe it down with a damp cloth.
This comes from the estate of a wealthy San Francisco family. When I asked about the piece they speculated that it was from the 1930s to the 1950s. I'm going to be conservative on that date range and go with the 1950s based on the shape and the style of painting.
It is signed on the back “MADE IN FRANCE” and what seems to be a serial number “CA-Y0752094”
